Police had a hard time controlling the villagers protesting against non-payment of compensation after taking their land for highway construction when Uttar Pradesh Congress president Raj Babbar joined them today and announced to sit on dharna till their demands are met.
First the police did not allow the Congress president to enter the district and was detained on the border this morning but later, on police protection, he was taken to Dhoda village under Tanda tehsil. The DM and SP of the district interacted with the Congress president but he refused to budge and sat on dharna after blocking the demolition drive.
Several hundred villagers too came in support and they too joined the dharna.
Mr Babbar told reporters that ”It is illegal to demolish houses without giving adequate compensation to the villagers.”
“I will continue to sit on dharna till the authorities make payment of the compensation to the villagers,” he said.UP Congress spokesperson Amarnath Agarwal alleged that the state government was indulged in high-handedness by demolishing the houses without giving any compensation to the villagers…
